The Manchurian Candidate is a novel by Richard Condon, first published in 1959. It is a political thriller about the son of a prominent U.S. political family who is brainwashed into being an unwitting assassin for a Communist conspiracy.
The novel has twice been adapted into a feature film with the same title: the first was released in 1962 and the second in 2004.
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001, a number of films, television shows, advertisements, and other media that included images of the World Trade Center were altered to remove any glimpses of the Twin Towers. Particularly for the first several months after 9/11, when even unrelated images that were only vaguely reminiscent of that tragic day were criticized for capitalizing on disaster, the wound inflicted on that awful day was still far too raw to risk additional hurt by resuming business as usual.
A similar phenomenon has been linked to the film The Manchurian Candidate, John Frankenheimer’s 1962 Cold War thriller about a U.S. soldier who is abducted during the Korean War and spirited away to Manchuria, where his Communist captors brainwash him before allowing him to return to the United States to unwittingly serve them as a political assassin. Legend has it that when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas a year after the movie’s original release, and rumors were swirling that his murder might have been part of a Communist conspiracy, Frank Sinatra (whose company produced The Manchurian Candidate) hastily withdrew the film from distribution and then suppressed it for twenty-five years because (pick one or more of the following):
The screenplay is by George Axelrod, based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel The Manchurian Candidate. The film’s leading actors are Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, and Angela Lansbury, with co-stars Janet Leigh, Henry Silva, and James Gregory.[4]
The plot centers on Korean War veteran Raymond Shaw, part of a prominent political family. Shaw is brainwashed by communists after his Army platoon is captured. He returns to civilian life in the United States, where he becomes an unwitting assassin in an international communist conspiracy. The group, which includes representatives of the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union, plans to assassinate the presidential nominee of an American political party leading to the overthrow of the U.S. government.
The film was released in the United States on October 24, 1962, at the height of U.S.–Soviet hostility during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It was widely acclaimed by Western critics and was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress (Angela Lansbury) and Best Editing. It was selected in 1994 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.[5][6]

he Manchurian Candidate was released in the post-Red Scare period of the early 1960s, when anti-Communist political ideology still prevailed.[67] Just one month after the film’s release, the John F. Kennedy administration was in the midst of Cuban Missile Crisis and nuclear brinkmanship with the Soviet Union.[68]
That Frankenheimer and screenwriter Axelrod persisted in the production is a measure of their political liberalism, in a historical period when, according to biographer Gerald Pratley “ it was clearly dangerous to speak of politics in the out-spoken, satiric vein that characterized this picture.”[69] Film critic David Walsh adds that “the level of conviction and urgency” that informs The Manchurian Candidate, reflects “the relative confidence and optimism American liberals felt in the early 1960s.”[70] Frankenheimer’s “terrifying parable” of the American political milieu was sufficiently well-received to avoid its summary rejection by distributors.[71]
The Manchurian Candidate, due its subject matter and its proximity to the Kennedy assassination is inextricably linked to that event.[72] Frankenheimer acknowledged as much when, in 1968, he described The Manchurian Candidate as “a horribly prophetic film. It’s frightening what’s happened in our country since that film was made.”[

In 1960, Simões-Ferreira earned a Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages and Literature from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. In 1963, she graduated from the School of Translation and Interpretation at the University of Geneva and moved to the United States to be an interpreter at the United Nations.

Timothy Good – UFO Authority
Worldwide research, interviewing key witnesses and discussing the subject with astronauts, military and intelligence specialists, pilots, politicians and scientists, has established Timothy Good as a leading authority on UFOs and the alien presence – the most highly classified subject on Earth.
He became interested in the subject in 1955, when his passion for aviation and space led him to read a book by Major Donald Keyhoe describing UFO sightings by qualified observers such as military and civilian pilots. Former American President Dwight D Eisenhower had three secret meetings with aliens from another planet, a former US government consultant has claimed.
The 34th President of the United States met the extraterrestrials at a remote air base in New Mexico in 1954, according to lecturer and author Timothy Good.
Eisenhower and other FBI officials are said to have organized the showdown with the space creatures by sending out ‘telepathic messages’. The two parties finally met up on three separate occasions at the Holloman Air Force base and there were ‘many witnesses’, it is claimed.
Conspiracy theorists have circulated increased rumors in recent months that the meeting between the Commander-in-Chief and people from another planet took place.
But the claims from Mr Good, a former U.S. Congress and Pentagon consultant, are the first to be made publicly by a prominent academic.
Speaking on Frank Skinner’s BBC2 show Opinionated, he said aliens at the first meeting were “Nordic” in appearance, but a deal was signed with a race called “Alien Greys”.
Mr Good said:
“Aliens have made both formal and informal contact with thousands of people throughout the world from all walks of life.”
Asked why the aliens don’t go to somebody ‘important’ like Barack Obama, he said:
“Well, certainly I can tell you that in 1954, President Eisenhower had three encounters, set up meetings with aliens, which took place at certain Air Force bases including Holloman Air Force base in New Mexico.”
He added that there were “many witnesses”.
Eisenhower, who was president from 1953 to 1961, is known to have had a strong belief in life on other planets.
The former five-star general in the United States Army who commanded the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War, was also keen on pushing the U.S. space program.
His meeting with the cosmic life forms is said to have taken place while officials were told that he was on vacation in Palm Springs, California, in February 1954.
The initial meeting is supposed to have taken place with aliens who were ‘Nordic’ in appearance, but the agreement was eventually ‘signed’ with a race called ‘Alien Greys’. [mixed race for use as sleeper agents indirect rule?]
Mr Good added:
“We know that up to 90 per cent of all UFO reports can be explained in conventional terms. However, I would say millions of people worldwide have actually seen the real thing.”
According to classified documents released by the Ministry of Defense in 2010, Winston Churchill may have ordered a UFO sighting to be kept secret. The UFO was seen over the East Coast of England by an RAF reconnaissance plane returning from a mission in France or Germany towards the end of the war.
Churchill is said to have discussed how to deal with UFO sightings with Eisenhower.
