members of a government operations subcommittee gathered this past Tuesday to consider legislation concerning therelease of documents which relate to the assassination of President John F Kennedy the measure would create ajudicially appointed review board to oversee the release of thousands of classified documents dating back nearlythree decades on Monday evening the subcommittee received a letter from the justice department strongly opposing thelegislation the letter raised several objections from questions of constitutionality to a need to protect intelligent sources and methods the subcommittee chairman Democrat John Conyers of Michigan said he wa ssurprised by the letter because the FBI and the CIA had already expressed their support for the release of the assassination documents several witnesses testified at Tuesday’s hearing including film director Oliver Stone whose recent movie JFK has rekindled public interest in the Kennedy assassination we will also hear from Congressman Lewis Stokes who had served as chairman of the old house selectcommittee on assassinations he is the sponsor of house joint resolution 454 regarding the release of the Kennedy files now and so we take you to the Rayburn House Office Building here on Capitol Hill for Tuesday’s hearing which was gavel to order by Congressman Conyers
